Well Known Presque Isle Politician Passes Away

Governor Paul R. LePage directed all State of Maine flags in Presque Isle only to be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Thursday, June 9 in honor of former State Representative Mary H. MacBride, who died June 5, 2016.

If the Maine State and United States flags are flown on the same staff, it is appropriate to affix the Maine State flag with a black ribbon to denote mourning in lieu of lowering.

Born on May 11, 1916 in Blaine, Maine, Mary H. MacBride was the daughter of Stetson H. and Gladys G. Hussey. She graduated from Wheaton College in 1939.

After her husband died in 1975, she ran for the Maine House of Representatives from Presque Isle, serving 16 years. While serving in the legislature, she championed any cause she believed would better The County and the district she represented. According to her family, she loved discussing all the issues of the day, and it was a great feeling of satisfaction to her to serve the people of Presque Isle, Aroostook County and the State of Maine.

In 1979, she was honored by Beta Sigma Phi Society as "Lady of the Year;" in 1983, she was selected by the Bangor Daily News as one of the 10 most outstanding women in Northern and Eastern Maine; and she was selected as one of the 12 outstanding women in Aroostook County by Maine Centers of Women.
