With hundreds upon hundreds of new metal albums this year, the number of new metal songs is borderline incalculable! Here in the 6th Annual Loudwire Music Awards, we've combed through it all and narrowed it down to 15 songs in contention to be bestowed the title of Best Metal Song.

Opeth got their year started with the "Sorceress," the title track off their latest record. It stands as by far the heaviest track since Mikael Akerfeldt dropped the growling vocals and a worthy candidate. Also on the progressive side is "Stormbending," a moody, calming track from the Devin Townsend Project as well as Gojira's "Silvera," which has ushered in a new age for the quartet. Also prog in nature, but certainly more brutal is Fleshgod Apocalypse's symphonic death metal madness found on "The Fool" and Meshuggah's earth-cracking "Clockworks."

Anthrax's run through a myriad of moods in one of their all-time tracks, "Blood Eagle Wings" and Metallica, another thrash vet, dialed up "Moth Into Flame," a NWOBHM-inspired track that is among their best. But wait — theres more! More thrash that is! Megadeth started off the year early, dazzling fans with "Dystopia" with brilliant hooks and infectious melodies.

Ghost only contributed one new song, but "Square Hammer" is all that was needed has been on repeat since its release. Dropping a surprise album, Avenged Sevenfold only gave one musical hint with the epic "The Stage" serving as the lone pre-release track. Speaking of epic, there's Babymetal, the J-pop teen metal phenomenon who brought us the high-octane "Karate!"

Korn teased fans for a seeming eternity, promising their new record would be a return to their classic, pummeling heaviness and look no further than "Insane" for the proof. Splitting from Immortal and pursuing his first solo effort, Abbath served up his signature riffing frenzy on "Winterbane."

That leaves us with two sets of Swedes on the board, Amon Amarth's ode to drinking, "Raise Your Horns," which should be a staple at any metal party and Katatonia's soothing and all-too-catchy "Serein."
