The University of Southern Maine baseball team is off and running in the post-season. The Huskies won their conference tournament opener 5-3 over Western Connecticut.

USM is hosting the Little East Conference Tournament as the #1 seed. Western Conn is the #6 seed. It is a six team, double elimination tourney.

Junior RHP Shyler Scates pitched 7.1 innings of three run ball. He struck out 10 without walking a batter to pick up his fifth win of the year.

Andrew Richards finished the game and got out of a bases loaded jam in the ninth.

Sam Dexter, Brendon Joyce and Matt Bender had the RBIs for the Huskies.

The win improves the USM record to 28-12 and the Huskies play next at 12:30pm on Thursday. The team is trying to work its way back to a third straight Division III College World Series.
