Unemployment Rate in New Brunswick on the Rise

The number of unemployed New Brunswickers rose by four tenths of a point in July to 10 percent.

According to figures from Statistics Canada, that is a higher rate than the agency initially reported earlier this month.

New Brunswick was first said to have lost the equivalent of 3,100 jobs in July, putting the unemployment rate at 9.8 percent. In reality, New Brunswick actually lost about 3,400 jobs. While 4,300 full-time jobs were lost, 900 part-time jobs were gained. But overall the labor force declined by 2,200 people.

In July, there were more people employed in educational services and in information, culture and recreation. At the same time, employment declined in construction as well as health care and social assistance.

The unemployment rate in Canada was 6.1% in July, compared with 6.2% in the United States.
