Two women were able to free themselves after their car plunged into the icy Meduxnekeag River early Friday morning just outside Woodstock, N.B.

Woodstock Fire Chief Ricky Nicholson tells us the white Hyundai went off the Bell Settlement Road in the Red Bridge area just before 4:30 a.m. The two young women managed to climb out of the car and walked to a nearby home to get help. There were no injuries, Nicholson said.

The vehicle was almost completely submerged in the river when crews arrived on scene. The towing service had to battle swift current as they pulled the car out just after daybreak Friday.

The RCMP is investigating to determine what caused the crash. There were snow flurries reported in the area in the early morning hours, but no word yet if weather was a factor.
