A man and a woman from Hancock County have been arrested following a seizure of heroin.

Agents with MDEA's Downeast Task Force, assisted by Ellsworth Police, stopped a 2005 Mercedes on High Street in Ellsworth around 7:30 Wednesday morning. The vehicle is owned by 32-year-old William Smeal of Hancock, who was in the vehicle at the time. With him was his girlfriend, Savanna Adams, aged 21.

Agents served a search warrant to Smeal that had been authorized for the vehicle, finding more than one-hundred (100) grams of bulk packaged heroin hidden inside, as well as $1,200 in cash.

The couple were arrested and charged with aggravated trafficking in heroin and taken to the Hancock County Jail. The vehicle was also seized.

A second search warrant was served for Smeal and Adams' home on Deerfield Drive in Hancock, seizing an additional forty (40) grams of heroin.

The MDEA had been alerted to Smeal and Adams leaving the state the previous day and agents followed his vehicle back into the area.

The estimated street value of the heroin was more than $50,000. Agents believe it was destined for retail sale in Hancock and Washington Counties.

Besides Ellsworth Police, MDEA was assisted by the Maine State Police and Holden Police Department.
