The Southern Aroostook Warriors claimed the regional title in the first game of Championship Saturday with a win over the Woodland Dragons at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor.

Top-seed Southern Aroostook held only a four-point lead at the half, but broke the game open in the third quarter, outscoring the No. 2 Dragons 17-8 on the way to a 55-41 win.

Sophomore guard Makaelyn Porter led the Warriors with 19 points. Freshman center Kacy Daggett added 13 points. Sydney Brewer had nine points.

For Woodland, Emily Curtis had 14 points and Jennie Cox had 10 points.

Southern Aroostook of Dyer Brook improves to 19-2 on the season, with its only two regular season losses coming to Class C Houlton.

It's the first regional title for the Warriors in more than 20 years.

Woodland ends its season at 17-4.

What's next: Southern Aroostook will play Vinalhaven for the state championship at 1 p.m. on Sat., March 3 at the Augusta Civic Center.
