RIP

The entertainment world lost a giant yesterday, when Garry Marshall, creator of some of the most popular television shows in the medium’s history and a director of some of the most beloved movies of the last 30 years, died after what The New York Times called “a series of strokes.” He was 81 years old.

Unfortunate news for fans of former Lois Lane and revered star Noel Neill, as the iconic Adventures of Superman star has passed away at age 95. Neill had portrayed the famous DC supporting character as early as 1948, including cameos in both Richard Donner’s 1978 update and 2006's Superman Returns.

Tragic news via The Guardian: Abbas Kiarostami, one of the greatest filmmakers of my lifetime — or anyone’s lifetime — has died. Kiarostami was undergoing treatment for gastrointestinal cancer; he had been diagnosed with the disease in March of 2016. Kiarostami was 76 years old.

Tragic news for fans of former WWE diva and reality star Joanie Laurer, as the iconic “Chyna” has passed away at age 46. In the years since here tenure as “9th wonder of the world” wrestling star, the performer was also known for her reality TV appearances, public persona and more.

If you like James Bond movies, you have several people to thank for your hero. Ian Fleming, obviously; he wrote the original Bond novels. Harry Saltzman and Albert R. “Cubby” Broccoli, who produced and guided the franchise for decades; Terence Young, who directed the first two movies with star Sean Connery. And then there’s Guy Hamilton, who helmed perhaps the greatest Bond adventure of them all, Goldfinger. Sadly, per the BBC, Hamilton past away on Wednesday in a hospital on the Spanish island of Majorca. He was 93 years old.

Sad news for fans of veteran actor and multiple Emmy-winner Doris Roberts, as the iconic Everybody Loves Raymond star has passed away. Apart from her famed role as Ray’s mother Marie Barone, Roberts is also remembered for her work on Broadway.

Back to the Future fans have been blessed with a lot of cool stuff lately; all kinds of sneakers, toys, Blu-rays and other ways to celebrate the recently passed 30th anniversary of their beloved franchise. But it’s now 2016, uncharted waters beyond “the future” of Back to the Future. This is a world without Marty, Doc, and the DeLorean. Sad news for fans of lifelong actor, Emmy and Oscar-winner Patty Duke, as the stage and screen actor behind The Miracle Worker, The Patty Duke Show and so much more has passed away. The acclaimed star and mother to Sean Astin is remembered as one of the Academy’s youngest winners, as well a staunch advocate for the mentally ill with the National Institute of Mental Health and others.

Sad news via Variety: The film world lost one of its greatest cinematographers today. Douglas Slocombe, the man who spent 50 years shooting some of the finest movies of all time, has died. He was 103 years old.

A sad day for fans of Eight is Enough and the world at large, as representatives of actor Dick Van Patten have confirmed news that the 86-year old passed away of unknown causes. The lifelong star was also known for his work in such Mel Brooks movies as Spaceballs and Robin Hood: Men in Tights.
