Summer Read to Take Place Across Aroostook in 15 Locations
United Way of Aroostook (UWA) is pleased to have coordinated a Summer Read Across Aroostook Day at 15 locations across the County!
These free, fun-filled events will take place on Wednesday., August 2nd from 10 am -11 am at sites all over Aroostook County. This one day, countywide event is a continuation of UWA commitment to our children, communities and literacy. Volunteers have been asked to read the book of their choice and really have fun with the children while emphasizing the importance of reading. In addition to the read aloud, children will color a book mark and enjoy some special reading prizes.
Volunteers will be stationed at sites all over Aroostook County including: Caribou Public Library, Fort Kent Public Library, Ashland Public Library, Mark & Emily Turner Library in Presque Isle, Katahdin Public Library in Island Falls, Birch Street Community Center in Presque Isle, Veterans Memorial Library in Patten, Fort Fairfield Housing Authority, Madawaska Public Library, Easton Rec Center (Tuesday August 1st 10-11am), Walter T.A. Hansen Memorial Library in Mars Hill, Houlton Elementary School, Abel J. Morneault Memorial Library in Van Buren, long Lake Public Library in St. Agatha and Frost Memorial Library in Limestone.
United Way of Aroostook partners with 14 local health and human service agencies and supports other local organizations by providing grants to assist in the local work that they do. UWA also implements several of its own programs which promote the well-being of people right here in the County, including several programs that promote literacy here in the County. Local literacy programs funded by UWA include: Dolly Parton Imagination Library (providing nearly 2,200 books to preschool children each month), Summer Slide (providing nearly 700 County 1st graders with books for summer reading), and Summer Reading Celebrations (proving activities and prizes to encourage reading).
