State Troopers have responded to a significant number of car-deer crashes recently in the County with the majority resulting in property damage only. Lt. Brian Harris says each night has brought sporadic reports of car-deer crashes and also reports of deer that have been struck by vehicles and left on the roadway.

Lt. Harris says it’s the time of year that deer are gathering in the fields and woods and crossing busy roadways while they herd together and search for food.

State Police are encouraging motorists to use extra caution when traveling, especially at dusk and at nighttime, when visibility is limited and the deer are more active.

The deer crashes have taken place at various spots throughout Aroostook County, but have been most prevalent on the Interstate in the Sherman/Island Falls area and also on Route 1 Littleton/Monticello area, Harris said.

Motorists are advised to use slower speeds when traveling after dark and to pay extra attention to the shoulders and sides of the road for deer activity.
