A 33-year-old man faces several charges after crashing his BMW into a police cruiser on Interstate 95 in southern Maine early Saturday morning.

At around 2:30 a.m., State Police received reports of an erratic operator, southbound on I-95 from Kennebunk, according to spokesman Steve McCausland. State Trooper Kristy Libritz headed north from York and met up with two officers from the Wells Police Department at the mile 16.5 crossover in Wells to watch for the car. Meanwhile, a tractor trailer driver following the car was updating police with the location of the erratic vehicle.

As the BMW approached, officers could see it weaving all over the road and then it suddenly veered into the median crossover and collided with the Wells police cruiser, McCausland said. The impact caused the cruiser to roll over and land in the passing lane on the northbound side of I-95. The BMW crashed into the median guardrail.

The two officers in the Wells cruiser, officers Dylan McNally and Thomas Kinney were treated at the scene for minor injuries.

The driver of the 2006 BMW, 33-year-old Anthony Menici of Charlestown, Massachusetts, was transported to Southern Maine Medical Center for treatment of a number of injuries.

Menici was charged with OUI, Driving to Endanger and possession of Suboxone, MCausland said.

Both the BMW and the Wells Police cruiser were demolished in the crash.
