Spotlights are a band out of Brooklyn N.Y., who play an entrancing form of heavy music that incorporates sludge, shoegaze and dreampop. Today, the group is exclusively premiering their new single "What Is This? Where Are We?" (listen below) off their forthcoming album Seismic, due out Oct. 6 via Ipecac Recordings.

The band excels at letting songs breathe, taking their time in building up a track's strength and beauty simultaneously. On this tune, the guitar work is absolutely thunderous, paving the way for the otherworldly vocals to glide into the music. Eventually, the stormy guitars give way to a more delicate take on the sound. The core of the riff never fades out of focus from the rest of the song, and the track doesn't pull its punches on intent, showing that Spotlights can hang just as much in metal as any other genre.

Of the track, Spotlights' husband-wife duo Mario and Sarah Quintero state, "This song is one of our personal favorites on the record. It encapsulates the overall 'beauty in destruction' theme of the album, and we were lucky enough to have Aaron Harris (Isis, Palms) play drums on it!" Harris also served as the producer of the Seismic album.

It's been an incredible year for Spotlights, as they're currently in the midst of supporting the Melvins on a massive tour, and will follow that up with a late fall trek with Hundredth. See the band's upcoming dates here, and pre-order the album Seismic here.
