Marvel formally introduced the new Spider-Man, as played by Tom Holland, in Captain America: Civil War. After his rumble with Captain America, Iron Man and crew, he’ll have to return to Queens to fight some of his own villains in the forthcoming Spider-Man reboot. But, which of Spidey’s many villains will he be facing off against? It looks like it will be someone we’ve never seen on the big screen before.

According to Birth.Movies.Death, Vulture will be making his cinematic debut in the upcoming Spider-Man film, reportedly titled Spider-Man: Homecoming. Their report seems to indicate that while Vulture would be one of the villains in the film, he would not the film’s main villain. More than likely it would be an opening sequence since, thank goodness, we don’t have to spend time going over Spider-Man’s origin again.

While this would be Vulture’s first time in a Spider-Man movie, he came very close with both previous iterations. John Malkovich was set to play Vulture in Sam Raimi’s aborted Spider-Man 4 (which, oddly, would have included Anne Hathaway playing a character called The Vulturess), and the Amazing Spider-Man 2 credits sequence showed Vulture’s wings, indicating he’d be returning for the Sinister Six movie that never happened.

In the comics, Vulture is Adrian Toomes, a young engineer who invents an electromagnetic harness that enables the wearer to fly like a bird (not unlike Falcon, which should be interesting given that they now exist in the same cinematic universe). He, like so many supervillains before him, goes a little crazy when he realized the electromagnetism had increased his strength to superhuman levels.

The same report from BMD says that the Spider-Man: Homecoming title could be announced as early as this week to capitalize on the buzz Spidey is generating in Captain America: Civil War. We’ll update if any more details are officially revealed.

Spider-Man opens in theaters on July 7, 2017.
