Soundgarden Releases New Mix of ‘Flower’ From ‘Ultramega OK’ Expanded Edition

Soundgarden are preparing a remixed and expanded version of their 1988 full-length debut, Ultramega OK, that’s set to arrive March 10. They’ve now given us a second taste of the improved sonics in the form of “Flower,” which can be streamed above.

The group are calling this a “correction” of the original LP, which was produced by Drew Canulette and released by SST. But Soundgarden was never happy with the sound and had planned to remix it for subsequent pressings. However, before too long, their career took off and they never got the opportunity to get the project done.

Last year, after getting control of the original multi-track tapes, they gave them to engineer Jack Endino to remix. They also found six versions of tracks that wound up on Ultramega OK that they recorded with Endino in 1987, and decided to add them to this new package. One of those rare recordings from what they’re calling the Ultramega EP, “Beyond the Wheel,” was released when Soundgarden announced the news last month.

Ultramega OK will be reissued on CD, two LPs, a digital download and cassette. The set features liner notes from guitarist Kim Thayil, a foil-stamped gatefold and a custom dust sleeve. You can pre-order it at either Soundgarden’s webstore and Sub Pop, where you’ll be given an immediate download of “Beyond the Wheel (Early Version)” and “Flower.” Those who pre-order the vinyl will, while supplies last, be shipped the maroon-and-blue colored vinyl that they’re calling the “Loser Edition.”
