Last week, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige said that now that Spider-Man is part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, part of the fun is to have those characters go “back and forth” between their movies. The new Spider-Man makes his first appearance in Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War and now it’s time for someone from the Marvel side to repay the favor in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Could that person be Robert Downey, Jr.?

Based mostly on their relationship in Civil War (as you see in the trailer, Tony Stark is the one who calls Spidey into action), many assumed that Iron Man would be the one Marvel character most likely to pop up in Sony’s new Spider-Man film. Last night on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Kimmel asked Robert Downey, Jr. point blank.

Kimmel said he was particularly excited by Spider-Man in Civil War and noted, “It’s exciting for the Spider-Man movie, which Iron Man will be a part of.” It’s a definitive statement, but Kimmel likely has no more knowledge than you or I, and was just leading Downey, Jr. into a confirmation of said appearance on his show. Which he kinda, sorta got.

“Perhaps, I will,” said the actor, before noting, “I don’t have a contract yet.” Those are similar comments to what Downey, Jr. was saying prior to Captain America: Civil War, when the press was asking about his involvement in another Marvel movie and he told David Letterman, “I’m going to do other stuff with Marvel. I’m still going to be involved with Marvel and there’s gonna be plenty of fun stuff to happen.”

Downey, Jr. went on to say that growing up Spider-Man was his favorite superhero. “To me, Spider-Man…that was my whole deal. He was funny, he was cool, he was young, like us.”

While nothing concrete has been announced, all signs seem to be pointing towards a Tony Stark appearance in the new Spider-Man movie, which would certainly be an exciting way to launch the new franchise.

Spider-Man: Homecoming opens in theaters on July 7, 2017.
