Famed director Terrence Malick (Badlands, Days of Heaven) is set to release a new movie centered around the music scene in Austin, Texas. Arriving on March 17, Song to Song will star Ryan Gosling, Rooney Mara and Natalie Portman and feature appearances by a handful of musicians, including Patti Smith, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Iggy Pop.

The news comes via Indiewire, who reprint the film’s premise. “In this modern love story set against the Austin, Texas music scene, two entangled couples — struggling songwriters Faye (Rooney Mara) and BV (Ryan Gosling), and music mogul Cook (Michael Fassbender) and the waitress whom he ensnares (Natalie Portman) — chase success through a rock ‘n’ roll landscape of seduction and betrayal.”

They also note the appearances of Smith, Pop and the Chili Peppers, as well as cameos by Florence + the Machine, Lykke Li and the Black Lips. However, it is unknown at this time if they are acting or singing. Stereogum says that Arcade Fire, Fleet Foxes, St. Vincent and Iron & Wine have also been linked with the movie over the years.

Song to Song marks the second recent movie in which Gosling plays a musician. In the critically acclaimed musical La La Land, which was released last month, he stars as Sebastian Wilder, an up-and-coming jazz pianist who dreams of owning his own jazz club. The film was nominated for seven Golden Globe Awards, including Best Motion Picture — Comedy, and Best Actor and Actress — Comedy/Musical nods for both Gosling and co-star Emma Stone.
