Presque Isle Students Tour Wind Power Technology Center at NMCC

Presque Isle Middle School students took over the Wind Power Technology and Computer-Aided Drafting labs at Northern Maine Community College on Thursday, March 19th. Twenty-five students from Lisa Marie Dow’s eighth-grade science class learned how science applies outside the classroom from demonstrations and hands-on experiences at NMCC.

“It’s always exciting when students can go on a field trip and see real-world uses for the science theory they learn in the classroom,” says Dow. “We are really fortunate to have Northern Maine Community College in our backyard with state-of-the-art labs so that students can imagine future employment opportunities.”

“We’re happy to welcome young students so they may gain exposure and feel comfortable in the College environment. They can also get a first-hand look at some of the possibilities as they consider higher education,” says Pam Buck, chair of the Trade and Technical Department. “It’s great to see boys and girls light up when they realize a technical education can be fun and very rewarding.”

The students spent time in the Computer-Aided drafting lab each designing a bedroom. They were able to print their design and keep it as a souvenir of their first drafting project.

A demonstration of the climbing, rescue and science involved in wind energy highlighted the tour of the Wind Power Technology lab.

Another tour is planned for the science students of the Electrical lab and the Precision Machining lab next week.
