A search is underway for a missing man near the St. John River in Clair, New Brunswick, just across from Fort Kent, Maine.

According to CIMT-TV, the man has not been seen for a few days. His car was found abandoned off Highway 161 near the International Bridge. Police say there were footprints leading to the river.

Firefighters from Clair were called to the scene Saturday afternoon to assist police in their investigation. Police say it would be difficult for them to venture onto the St. John River, which is partially covered with ice.

A security perimeter has been set up along the shore. Search operations were suspended for the night and are expected to resume Sunday.

**Update** RCMP have identified the missing man as 53-year-old from Baker Brook.
