From MLB general manager to Boston Red Sox first base coach. Welcome to Beantown Ruben Amaro Jr.

Amaro had been Philadelphia Phils GM since 2008 but the team told him in early September that they were not going to renew his contract.

Perhaps he is best known by Sox fans as the guy that wanted too much in return for pitcher Cole Hamels. For months, a Hamels trade was talked about. It never happened and at the deadline Hamels was traded to Texas.

Amaro will replace Arnie Beyeler on John Farrell's coaching staff. He'll coach first base and work with outfielders.

He spent eight years in the majors as an outfielder for the Angels, Phils and Indians in the 1990's.
