I was at swimming lessons with my youngest the other day and one of the neat things the instructor does when encouraging a 3 year old to get in the water on a 'bodyboard' is to tell them it's a sandwich and they can put whatever they want on it.  Most kids, like mine, say something like grape jelly.  One boy in the class said broccoli, after which I instinctively glared at his mother and fell into a pit of parental depression.  What am I doing wrong.

We have a rule in our house.  If Mommy or Daddy make something for supper, it's what's for supper.  Nothing else.  If you don't eat it, you don't eat.  Of course we cave quickly when the whining becomes unbearable.  Some would say therein lies the problem.  Consistency.  Mom works from home, and I'm rarely home for supper anyway.  My kids will eat a handful of mostly crappy food (ie chicken nuggets, pizza, spaghetti, etc.).  They do enjoy fruit quite often but the vegetable thing doesn't fly.

It's to the point where they simply look at what's cooking and decide that it's not for them because it 'looks' disgusting.  How do I break them of this?  How do I turn it around so that healthy food becomes the norm in our home instead of cereal and pancakes for supper?  Any kid nutritionists and better parents are welcome to chime in.
