Carleton County Murder Suspect to Undergo Psychiatric Evaluation
A Hartland area man charged in the death of his mother will undergo a 30-day psychiatric assessment.
Following a brief appearance in Woodstock Provincial Court, 25-year-old Ryan Ernest Roy was ordered to the Restigouche Hospital Centre in Campbellton for an evaluation.
Roy was charged with first degree murder and arson in connection with the death of Phyllis Roy, whose body was discovered on March 2nd inside a burned-out home in Peel, New Brunswick. The home was completely engulfed in flames when the Hartland Fire Department arrived. The RCMP began investigating the fire and death and were led to the woman's son as a suspect.
Council for the accused told the court Friday that Roy has a long history of abusing prescription drugs and may not fully understand the charges.
