Need a Weekend Getaway? Get Locked Up at Boston Hotel That Was Once a Jail

There's one Boston hotel whose guests weren't always there by choice. The Liberty Hotel (with awesome wordplay for a name) is a luxury Starwood hotel in a historic building that was once a jail.

The Charles Street Jail was built in 1851 with 220 granite cells, arched windows, and a 90-foot tall octagonal rotunda. Over the years, the jail housed famous inmates such as Malcolm X, former Boston governor James Michael Curley, and World War II prisoners of war.

Although the jail was ruled unconstitutional in 1973 due to overcrowding, it remained open until 1990. It was converted into a hotel in 2007 and now you can enjoy a cocktail at Clink, lounge in one of the cells-turned-luxury suites, and explore much of the original character and detail of the Charles Street Jail.
