Legendary Michigan State hockey coach Ron Mason has died at the age of 76. The cause is an apparent heart attack.

Mason was a father-in-law to the the late Shawn Walsh, the former UMaine hockey coach. In fact, Walsh was a backup goalie for Mason at Bowling Green and then became an assistant coach under Mason at BGSU and moved with Mason to Michigan State.

Travis Walsh, a son of Shawn Walsh and grandson of Mason, just completed his senior year at Michigan State.

When Mason retired from coaching in 2002 he was college hockey's winningest coach with 924 wins. His Spartans won the national title in 1986. His teams played in 19 NCAA tournaments.

Mason was inducted into the U-S Hockey Hall of Fame in 2013.

He was MSU athletic director from 2002 to 2007.
