The new College Football Playoff selection committee says Mississippi State is the best team in the country. Wonder how many Bulldogs fans remember a Saturday night ten years ago?

That Saturday night in September 2004 when Jack Cosgrove's UMaine Black Bears went down to Starkville and shocked 43,000 SEC fans. Final score: Maine 9 Mississippi State 7.

It was Maine's first win over a Division 1-A team (now called FBS).

Remember QB Ron Whitcomb. RB Montell Owens. WR Kevin McMahan. Kicker Mike Mellow. On the defensive side, Jermaine Walker and Brandon McGowan.

The Black Bears not only left Mississippi State with a win but also with a $350,000 guarantee game check.

Back in 2012, a fan vote called that win the greatest moment in UMaine football history.

NOTE:  While UMaine has a bye week on the schedule this week, #1 Mississippi State hosts the Arkansas Razorbacks Saturday at Davis Wade Stadium. A sellout crowd of 61,889 is expected.
