After four weeks without any significant snowfall, Aroostook County is bracing for a major winter storm.

The National Weather Service in Caribou has issued a Winter Storm Warning for all of northern Maine from late Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday afternoon.

Forecasters say 10 to 18 inches of snow is likely across all of Aroostook County. Heavy snow accompanied by strong winds will lead to blowing snow, reduced visibility and hazardous travel conditions.

The snow is expected to move into the Houlton area sometime around 3 p.m. Tuesday and work its way northward. Snowfall will become heavy Tuesday evening and continue through midday Wednesday.

The Caribou weather office reports a total of just 3 inches of snow has fallen since February 14.
