The moose hunt is broken up over several sections in different parts of the state. The first stretch begins on Monday and ends on Oct. 1 and is concentrated in far northern and eastern Maine.

The state gave out 2,140 permits this year and awarded them in a drawing. Nearly 49,000 hunters entered the lottery.

The state allotted 675 fewer permits than last year. State biologists are trying to meet demands for more moose in the woods, where the public like to view the animals in the wild.
