TOPSHAM, Maine (AP) — Authorities say a Maine toddler who was mauled by her babysitter's dog is in danger of losing her eyesight.

The Times Record reports the toddler was attacked Tuesday evening at a Topsham home. Police say the babysitter was preparing dinner when the child put her hand on the dog's back. Authorities say the dog turned and bit the child's face.

The toddler was taken to Tufts Medical Center in Boston where she was listed in critical condition. Topsham Police Lt. Fred Dunn says doctors said the child might lose her vision.

The 8-year-old boxer was taken to Coastal Humane Society for a 10-day quarantine.

Police say the toddler lives with her grandparents in Wiscasset.

Dunn described the incident as "an unfortunate accident."
