People who snowmobile in the great state of Maine could soon see higher registration fees, if a bill that's in the Maine House of Representatives passes and becomes law.

The bill would increase the snowmobile registration fee by $5 to a new high of $45. The extra $5 would go toward the state's Snowmobile Trail Fund.

Non-residents would face raised fees as well. The three-day registration fees would go from $43 to $50. And non-residents who snowmobile the entire season would have to pay $110, up from the current rate of $88.

Supporters say the increase is necessary to maintain the state's trail system.

The bill is sponsored by Democratic Representative Stephen Stanley of Medway.

The bill faces further votes in the House and Senate.
