The Washburn Beavers made history Saturday winning a record fifth state title in a 60-54 victory over the Rangeley Lakers.

It was a big day for Mackenzie Worcester. The senior scored 37 points, setting a Class D girls single-game record on the way to the win, and finishing her high school career with 2,001 points.

Senior Joan Overman added 10 for the Beavers and junior Emelia Churchill had 8 points.

Washburn's press routinely turned over Lakers, who despite the miscues, kept the game close and cut a 12-point lead to just four points in the final minute.

Rangeley was led by senior Taylor Esty with 30 points. Seve Deery-DeRaps had 14 points and Blayke Morin had 10.

Washburn finishes the season undefeated, and in their 5-year reign over Class D, the Beavers have amassed a 105-5 record.

The Forest Hills boys claimed their second gold ball in three years on Satruday with a 51-45 hard-fought win over the Fort Fairfield Tigers.

"It was a dogfight," Forrest Hills coach Anthony Amero said after the game at a packed Cross Insurance Center.

Fort Fairfield cut the Forest Hills lead to two points in the waning moments of the game, but was unable to come any closer as the Forest Hills boys proved too much, hitting key free thows and grabbing key rebounds in the final minute.

It was a veteran Forest Hills team the claimed the championship, with four seniors starting for the Tigers. Senior Ryan Petrin led all scoeres with 16 points before fouling out with a minute and a half to go. Seniors Tanner Daigle and Matthew Turner had 14 points and 11 points, respectively. The fourth senior on the team, Brandon Ouellette, added 8.

Sophomore Christopher Giberson led Fort Fairfield with 15 points. Freshman Isaac Cyr had 11 points. Senior Hunter Beulieu had 9 points.

Forest Hills, of Jackman, ends the season as the only undefeated boys team in the state.
