On Sunday, January 28, at the Lawrence Junior High School gymnasium, the Maine Elks Association hosted the state championship round for the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Hoop Shoot foul shooting contest.

Four local youth had earned the right to compete at the State championship level after winning at their local school or recreation program’s foul shooting contest, then winning in their respective age groups at the Hoop Shoot contest hosted by the Presque Isle Elks, Lodge #1954,  and then at the Northern District Elks’ foul shooting contest.

Blayne Tardif, eight-year-old daughter of Jaime and Rob Tardif of Mapleton, and Faith Sjoberg, thirteen-year-old daughter of Kevin and Sue Sjoberg of Presque Isle, both captured the State championship honors in their respective age groups.  Both have now gained the right to compete in the New England Region Hoop Shoot contest to be held in March.  Faith Sjoberg also won, for the third consecutive year, the Alan W. Richard Trophy, awarded to the highest scoring girls shooter in the championship contest.

Wesley LaPointe, twelve-year-old son of Travis LaPointe and Farrah Boucher of Caribou, and Amelia Godin, eleven-year-old daughter of Steven and Carla Godin of Caribou, received trophies for second and third place, respectively, in their age divisions.
