January 2017 New Music Releases
The list of January 2017 new music releases isn't exactly robust, as the industry slowly awakens from a post-holiday slumber – but there are some notable new offerings.
Longtime Ratt frontman Stephen Pearcy is releasing a solo album, as is the E Street Band's Jake Clemons, nephew and successor to the late Clarence Clemons. Members of famous bands are also showing up in new places, including Guns N' Roses / Replacements vet Tommy Stinson (who has revived his '90s group Bash and Pop) and Queens of the Stone Age guitarist Troy Van Leeuwen (Gone Is Gone).
Reissue highlights include a deluxe edition of the Grateful Dead's self-titled debut, the first in what promises to be a series of expanded projects celebrating the band's 50th anniversary. This new version includes the remastered original album and a second disc with live tracks recorded at the Vancouver Trips Festival in July 1966.
Cream's 1966 debut album will also celebrate its 50th anniversary with a four-disc deluxe edition that includes mono and stereo mixes of the original LP plus assorted singles and BBC sessions recorded around the time of the album's original release, among other goodies.
Brian Eno, the ex-Roxy Music member who went on to produce Talking Heads and U2, as well as a cult solo career, has a new album on the way too. Back less than a year after The Ship, Eno returns to his roots with Reflection, a record consisting of a single 54-minute ambient track.
