Maine State Police say Thomas Holmes of Westfield was traveling north on I-95 when he lost control of the 2011 Chevrolet Aveo and hit the guardrails on both sides of the highway. Holmes was wearing his seat belt and was not injured, according to Corporal Corey Hafford. The car then caught on fire and became fully engulfed in flames.

Hafford said this crash was followed by other crashes in the immediate area due to the icy and snow-covered roadway. The Aroostook County Sheriff’s department assisted with a multiple car crash that occurred as a result of the first accident.

In total there 6 vehicles involved in 3 separate crashes in the course of an hour in Smyrna.

Meanwhile, State Police responded to a separate rollover about 3 miles north in Ludlow on the southbound side of I-95. Trooper Pescitelli located the vehicle and made contact with the 40-year-old driver from Prince Edward Island, who was standing next to the vehicle unharmed.

Due to the icy conditions, the operator lost control of  his vehicle, which hit the snow bank, went airborne and landed on its front end. It then rolled onto its roof before coming to rest. State Police say the driver avoided serious injury because he was wearing a seat belt.
