A home run derby generally takes place before an all-star game. On Wednesday night the Eastern League All-Star game ended with a home run derby.Eastern League rules state that if the all-star game is tied at the end of the 9th inning a home run shootout will take place to determine the winner.

After 9 innings that game was tied at 4 so each team designated three hitters who each got one swing in the sudden death format. It took four rounds before Brian Pointer of the Reading Phillies sent one over the right field wall at Hadlock Field giving the East a 5-4 win.

The game was played in front of a sellout crowd of 7,368 in Portland. The Sea Dogs will now resume the season with the start of a 4-game series in New Hampshire.
