The crash happened Tuesday evening as the area was being hit with freezing rain. Authorities say 69-year-old George Drake of Houlton was driving too fast for the road conditions when he lost control of his Toyota 4-Runner SUV, which spun off the road, overturned into a ditch and struck several trees. His wife, 71-year-old Janet Drake, was killed in the crash. Police say she was not wearing a seat belt.

George Drake and a passenger, 33-year-old Clyde Geary, also of Houlton, sustained injuries and were transported by ambulance to Houlton Regional Hospital.

The couple's two dogs fled from the crash site, State Police said. One dog was recovered, but the other ran off. Authorities say Ruby, a pure bred Hungarian Vizsla, is about 60 pounds with short brown hair and a white patch on her chest.
