The investigation was initiated due to statements made by Schillinger to police on February 4, 2014. Police received a request to do a welfare check on Schillinger.

Detective Stewart Kennedy of the Houlton Police Department searched for Schillinger on Facebook. Kennedy found images posted on Schillinger’s Facebook page which prompted him to contact the National Center of Missing Children, according to the Houlton Police Department.

The National Center of Missing Children determined that Schillinger was disseminating child pornography using his email accounts. The photographs attached to emails allegedly contained explicit pictures of children under the age of twelve. There is no evidence that any of the images were of children from the greater Houlton area.

Schillinger was previously convicted of Public Indecency, Gross Sexual Misconduct and had his probation revoked for failing to complete sex offender counseling. Gary E. Schillinger is a Lifetime Registrant on the Maine Sex Offender Registry.

The Houlton Police was assisted by Homeland Security Investigations and Detective Bill Scull of the Presque Isle Police Department.
