State police say 38-year-old Herbert Winship III was driving a 2004 Pontiac SUV on the Burton Road in Linneus around 1:00 p.m.   The SUV went off the road, struck a mailbox and a telephone pole before coming to rest on the side of the roadway.

Trooper Jill Monahan responded to the crash to find that the driver had left the scene.  Police say Winship was located at a residence in Houlton and was arrested for operating after suspension and on three outstanding arrest warrants.

Winship was transported to the Aroostook County Jail and will appear in Houlton Superior Court at a later date, according to Sgt. Brian Harris.

State Police were assisted by Houlton Police Department.  The investigation is continuing with further charges possible, Harris said.
