Good people got together to do good things in Presque Isle today and this is day 12 of the Summer Gap Feeding Program, providing free meals for area kids.

The summer food service program started as a way to make sure that low-income children received nutritious meals during the summer months while school is out.

Children 18-years-old and younger are benefitting from this great program.

The Presque Isle summer food program feeds about 250 children a day when school is out, which is why the program is so important. However, once school goes back into session, the summer meals cease.

The United Way of Aroostook has partnered with The Aroostook Medical Center, the Presque Isle Housing Authority and the City of Presque Isle to come up with a solution to this ongoing problem.

For those who think hunger is not an issue in Presque Isle, just ask Sherry Locke, Director for the United Way of Aroostook.

She tells a story about a young boy who was about to eat a cat tail when he was asked what he was doing. Locke shared that the boy said he was hungry and knew that the cat tail was safe for him to eat.

Stories of hoarding also surface because these children don’t know where their next meal is coming from. And for the most part, they are simply victims of a problem that is not of their own doing.

The organizations call it the Summer Gap Feeding Program and they will be delivering lunch to feed insecure children in five different locations in Presque Isle during those 20 days.

The children can grab a sandwich, fruit, veggies and protein snacks like a granola bar, for example.

The organizations are looking for individuals, other groups, and businesses to help fight hunger in the Star City.

We appreciate your help and the help of these organizations who are helping those who have a hard time helping themselves.

For information on how you can help, please call Sherry Locke at 207-764-5197.
