Earth Day is a time for us to reflect on the way we treat our home planet. It's true that we pollute too much. We need to cultivate our natural resources and give back to Mother Earth. I'm not sure that I would go as far as the founder of Earth Day went though.

The story goes that Ira Einhorn, the master of ceremonies of the first Earth Day and a self-proclaimed anti-war, anti-violence hippie, claims that Earth Day was his idea. No one argued with him at the time. It was Senator Gaylord Nelson who put legislation in place back in 1970 to make it a day that we would recognize nationwide.

In 1977, Einhorn's girlfriend Helen Maddux broke up with him and was never seen again. His landlord called authorities 18 months later when he noticed a reddish-brown liquid seeping from the bottom of Einhorn's closet. Sure enough, Maddux's body was found, partially mummified, with stacks of newspapers, styrofoam, and air fresheners.

Ira Einhorn fled and wasn't captured for another 23 years when he claimed the CIA killed her. Needless to say, advocates now claim that Earth Day was founded by Senator Gaylord Nelson. Things that make you go hmmmm! Here are some alternative composting tips. Happy Earth Day.
