State Police say a 38-year-old man was stabbed Thursday night at his home in Glenburn in a fight with another man that took place inside a dog cage.

Alan Hartley is being treated for a stab wound to the face at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, according to State Police spokesman Steve McCausland.

State troopers arrested 25-year-old Jesse Merritt of Charleston in connection with the stabbing  late Thursday night in the town of Hudson.  Merritt was charged with elevated aggravated assault and was taken to the Penobscot County Jail.

The two men know each other and got into a fight after they crawled into a pit bull’s cage, McCausland said. The pit bull belongs to Hartley and is kept at his home on the Page Road in Glenburn.

It was not clear why the men were fighting in the cage.

McCausland said the dog was not involved in the altercation, which was reported about 9 p.m. Thursday.
