A Fort Kent man had to be air lifted to a Bangor hospital after a vehicle accident on Route 11 in Wallagrass on Tuesday.

Maine State Police say 49-year-old Rene Valcourt of Fort Kent was driving a 2008 Ford pickup northbound on Route 11 when the vehicle drifted off the roadway and into a ditch.

The pickup then struck a culvert head at 1396 Aroostook Road and went airborne, hit a tree and then a utility pole, which also snapped a utility pole on the west side of Route 11.

Fort Kent Fire Department used the Jaws of Life to free Valcourt from the wreckage.  State Police say he was not wearing a seat-belt.

Valcourt sustained serious injuries and was airlifted by Life Flight to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.

Power was out in the area for approximately 2 hours.

The investigation is continuing.
