The name “Stand Down” refers to a safe-haven for soldiers in the Vietnam War and is a widely attended event in the southern part of the state at TOGUS, a healthcare system for Veterans that emphasizes primary, specialty and preventive care in an outpatient setting. “It was essential for Aroostook County to host an event such as this for our local Veterans. Busing our Veterans to and from TOGUS was an eight hour round trip. Our Veterans were simply exhausted.” said John Deveau, Executive Director for United Veterans of Maine. “Stand downs offer an opportunity to support overall health and well-being of our Veterans. This is the time to get them the care they need, when they need it.” This event will present homeless and Veterans in need with informational resources and a variety of health care screenings in one easily accessible location. The event also aims to educate Veterans about services that are available to them that they might not be aware of. Local providers from various organizations will be at the stand down to offer these screenings to our Veterans at no cost to them such as dental, behavioral health, podiatry exams and eye care assessments, just to name a few.

Organization, planning and support for the event is provided by Cary Medical Center, Pines Health Services, Caribou VA Clinic, TOGUS, Aroostook Mental Health Center, Aroostook County Action Program, American Red Cross, Loring Job Corp and the United Veterans of Maine.

A shuttle will be available to and from the stand down for those who are in need of transportation. A light lunch and refreshments will be provided by the Cary Medical Center Café.
