Firefighters from four communities battled a fire on Monday that destroyed a single-story home on Perry Street in Oakfield.

Oakfield Fire Chief Joe White tells us the blaze broke out around 2 p.m. while the homeowner was working on water pipes. Crews from Island Falls, Patten and Stacyville responded to assist the Oakfield Volunteer Fire Department.

Chief White said a metal roof on the home made it difficult to extinguish the flames and an excavator was brought in to remove the roofing material. Crews remained on scene until around 7 p.m. Monday. The home was a total loss, White said.

Ann Kim of the American Red Cross of Maine said disaster volunteers were working with the man on Tuesday to ensure that he had food, a safe place to sleep and other essentials.

Over the next several days, the Red Cross will remain in contact with the affected individual to provide financial assistance and community referrals as he begins to make their road to recovery.
