Firefighters scrambled to save a home in Edmundston Wednesday evening as they battled an intense fire that ripped through a nearby garage.

Officials say the blaze broke out shortly after 7:30 p.m. in a garage on Gaboury Road in Edmundston. CIMT reports the building was completely ablaze when firefighters arrived and flames were shooting over 35 feet in the air.

Crews first focused on protecting the residence which was right next door. The home sustained superficial damage. The garage and the car parked inside were completely destroyed.

Officials said the presence of propane tanks in the garage forced them to set up a security perimeter as firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze. No one was injured. The cause of the fire is not known at this time.
