Filthy Friends, the new supergroup formed by Peter Buck and Corin Tucker, have confirmed a release date of Aug. 25 for their debut album Invitation. Check out the lead single "The Arrival," above, right now.

In addition to featuring that pair of R.E.M. and Sleater-Kinney alumni, Filthy Friends also includes members of King Crimson, the Minus 5 and Fastbacks. They formed in Portland, Ore., performing their debut show at the Todos Santos Music Festival in early 2016.

Their appreciation for one another, however, goes much further back. Buck said the first time he heard Sleater-Kinney play "was the day that Princess Diana died. I remember thinking, 'Where did these people come from?' It was a totally unique take on what punk rock was," he told Rolling Stone. Meanwhile, Tucker calls herself a "lifelong R.E.M. fanatic."

Initially, the group was being described as a "one-off." Now, they say Filthy Friends are cultivating a sound that is intentionally different from both R.E.M. and Sleater-Kinney. "The music sort of brought me back to my high school days, and to a memory of a girl who left home at the time," Tucker said. "[Lyrically] it's a sad story, but I wanted to make it rock & roll, so I sort of channeled a Replacements/Paul Westerberg vibe."

Neither Tucker nor Buck are strangers to politically conscious music, and while their sound may change, their inspirations haven't. Tucker, who is the the band's lyricist, says issues like murder of Trayvon Martin and the Paris Climate Agreement inspire her writing, and Black Lives Matter and climate change will continue to be at the forefront for the group.

Filthy Friends previously released "Any Kind of Crowd" as a the Record Store Day single; the anti-Trump track "Despierata"; and "Love in the Time of Resistance," which was recorded for Battle Hymns compilation curated to benefit the ACLU, Planned Parenthood and 350.org.
