Residents of the city of Edmundston are among those who have rallied to help victims of a devastating ice storm in northeast New Brunswick.

In addition to the three Edmundston teams who are helping out on the Acadian Peninsula, a truck and a trailer departed Wednesday with all the donations collected since Monday evening.

According to the city's website, donations from Edmundston area residents include non-perishable goods, diapers, toilet paper, batteries and over $5,000 in cash and gift cards. Students at the NBCC Edmundston campus collected $1,100 for the relief effort and Edmundston firefighters raised $1,000 in a short time.

On Thursday, nearly 5,000 customers were still without electricity, eight days after an ice storm wreaked havoc on the region. NB Power said as many as 400 utility poles snapped or came down under the weight of the ice and snow.
