A 51-year-old man has died in a pileup involving nine motorcycles and an RV near a campground in western New Brunswick.

Edmundston police say eight men and a woman, all of whom were driving motorcycles, also suffered injuries in the crash, which occurred Friday just before sunset. All nine were taken to hospital.

Edmundston police say the male motorcyclists involved in the crash were members of biker groups Hells Angels, Red Devils and Darksiders.

Investigators say the crash occurred on Highway 144 as the motorcyclists tried to pass the RV while it was preparing to turn into the St-Basile campsite entrance at about 7:30 pm.

The first cyclist struck the recreational vehicle while trying to avoid the fifth wheel.   Police say a chain reaction domino effect occurred where the bikes crashed into each other.

The deceased rider is identified as a man from Boisbriand, Quebec. His name has not yet been released. The driver of the RV was not injured.

An employee at the campsite told the The Canadian Press the highway "looked like it had blown up" after the pileup.

A man believed to be associated with the motorcyclists came Saturday to pick up personal belongings that were strewn in front of the grounds. A tow truck hauled away the damaged vehicles.

Police say the investigation into the collision is ongoing. An autopsy will be performed on the body of the deceased early next week.
