I know the answer to the question I’m about to ask but I thought I’d throw it out there to get some feedback. Growing up, no one in my family was musical yet I turned out to be both a musician and a songwriter. Does that mean that if my kids are exposed to their Dad the musician that they’ll scoff at the idea of being a musician? Part of me wants them to.

It can be a lonely, frustrating existence sometimes. Do I want that for my kids? On the other hand, it can create some of the most magical moments of a lifetime. I do want that for them. All four of my kids have expressed the desire to be in a band. That doesn’t mean they really do, I think they’re just trying to bond with me.

The oldest two take piano lessons and they say they enjoy them. My daughter is in band at school and she loves it. Then there’s my youngest, who will be an entertainer of some kind. He’s 3 and already owns 3 guitars (The pink one is his sisters) and a keyboard. Just try to take them away from him, I dare you. I know the benefits of music on academics so I will continue to promote it but in the era of fake and sudden fame a la American Idol and X-Factor, I don’t want to create delusions of grandeur.
