The Dark Tower movie hasn’t even dropped a first trailer, let alone confirmation a TV arm of the franchise will ever come to fruition. Still, executive producer Ron Howard at least remains optimistic, saying “creatively, it could work very well.”

For those unfamiliar with all this Dark Tower chicanery, Howard and associated producers have suggested for years that Stephen King’s The Dark Tower could spawn multiple films, with a TV series bridging the gap between theatrical ventures. We’re still waiting on an official preview for Nikolaj Arcel’s 2017 film, though recent reports suggested MRC and writer Akiva Goldsman might be moving ahead with a TV tie-in based on King’s novel Wizard and Glass.

Speaking with TVGuide, Howard was … less than committal on that front:

Dark Tower is coming out this summer. It’s a terrific movie directed by Nikolaj Arcel. And we are working on the television component. That’s not a commitment on the television side, but creatively, it could work very well, hand in hand with what we’d like the movies to be.

Howard would act as one of the show’s executive producers, along with Jeff Pinkner, Akiva Goldsman and Brian Grazer, with Arcel and co-writer Anders Thomas Jensen working on the script. It was suggested that the series might follow a younger Roland Deschain, with Idris Elba putting in occasional appearances.

We’ll see if anything shakes out on the Dark Tower franchise soon, but would a TV branch hamper the films?
