Criterion’s October Slate Is a Love Letter to Guillermo del Toro

There are few things more enjoyable as a cinephile than watching a movie from the Criterion Collection or listening to director Guillermo del Toro talk about art history and his favorite genre films. So with this week’s announcement that the Criterion Collection would be going very heavy on the del Toro films in their October lineup, we may actually be in danger of suffering from too much of a good thing. We didn’t know that was possible, either.

The highlight of the lineup has to be the brand new standalone edition of Pan’s Labyrinth, which includes a master of the film approved by del Toro himself and a new interview with the director on the intersection of fairy tales and his film. Additional new materials for this disc include an interview with actor Doug Jones; you will also find the features you remember from the earlier release of the film, including a commentary track with del Toro and the four making-of documentaries. In addition to this, Criterion will also be releasing a Guillermo del Toro collection that includes Cronos, The Devil’s Backbone, and Pan’s Labyrinth as a set. If you are only familiar with the most recent work by del Toro and would like to dive a little deeper, this is the place to start.

October isn’t all about horror films, however. Criterion will also be releasing the 2015 Best Picture nominee Boyhood with reams of special features for those wanting to learn more about the decade-long shoot. These will include a commentary track with director Richard Linklater and members of the cast, but also behind-the-scenes footage shot during the production, moderated discussions and conversations about the filmmaking process, and a new documentary tracking the 12-year production of the film.
