Climbing Katahdin in June [VIDEO]
I think every Mainer should have to climb Katahdin at least once in their lifetime! It isn't easy, but so worth it! This video gives you a taste of what it's like to hike Maine's highest mountain, without the burning leg muscles.
After hiking Katahdin when I was in high school, I determined the hike is something that should be on every Maine resident's bucket list. I'm glad I did it when I was in the best shape of my life, because it's not easy!
This video perfectly captures some of the many different obstacles as well as sights to see. A journey that took Tyler Neville and his family about 10 hours can be viewed in less than 3 minutes.
This video matches a blog Tyler wrote about his hike detailing the trails, different legs of the trip, sights and even smells (including his little cousins "constant flatulence").
When I hiked Katahdin we took the trail to Chimney Pond and then to the top making our adventure about 13 hours long. I wouldn't recommend doing this hike alone as there were a few moments of literally pushing someone over a large boulder to get to the other side as you will also see in Tyler's video at 00:56. The hike was not only my first time all the way up the mountain but also the first for my mother and uncle who are lifelong Maine residents. My father had done it before but it had been over 20 years since then. They all agree this is something ever Mainer has to do at least once.
Once was enough for me I think. Until I decide to go again I will stick to virtual hikes like Tyler's video.
